Pedro Guimaraes M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Guimaraes is a Psychiatrist with experience in Psychopharmacology and Psychotherapy. He also has over 40 years experience in Neuroscience. He has done research on the relationship of the Limbic System ( the part of the brain related to emotions) and Autonomic System, Epilepsy, Brain Imaging, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and currently uses different forms of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) to improve Neuro-Psychiatric Disorders.

 

Dr. Guimaraes grew up in Brazil influenced by Christian and Spiritist teachings. During the last 30 years he has been studying Chinese Philosophy, learning from the teachings of the I Ching and Lao Tzu. The past 6 years has been practicing meditation and studying the teachings of Buddha. He also for many years have been practicing yoga, studying Hinduism, and most recently Qigong.

Dr. Guimaraes uses the knowledge that he acquired from all these different traditions in his approach to help his patients to achieve wellbeing.

  • Was born in Brazil and before he came to US he was Associate Professor in Rio de Janeiro; He has been living in US for over 29 years and is a citizen

  • Was Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Neurosurgery, Yale University

  • Has done his Residency in Psychiatry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Yale University Medical School

  • Was Instructor at the Department of Psychiatry, Yale University

  • Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Vermont and

  • Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts

  • He was Medical Director at the Department of Psychiatry, Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, Maine

  • Medical Director for the Inpatient Services at the Department of Psychiatry, Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine

  • Attending Psychiatrist, UMass Memorial Medical Group, MA

  • Has worked as a Psychiatrist in New Zealand, Australia and Germany

  • Since 2010 he has had a private practice in San Luis Obispo, California
